Leadership development, Human Rights and Democracy
There is political apathy among the youths. Present belief, fuelled by African leaders suggests that democracy is a Western import. OAYouth is working to dispel any doubts that future African leaders must lead with compassion and responsibility
OAYouth strives to sensitize youth to understand that democracy is “universal, intrinsically woven principle that offers the conditions for human beings to achieve their maximum potential.” Guided by The African Youth Charter, OAYouth lobbies for issues of policy dialogue, democracy and human rights to be incorporated into academic curricular.
OAYouth is working to ensure that youth are exposed and understand human rights and participate political processes and have access to leadership development. In our policy dialogue project, young people are taught the value of involvement in the making of policies that affect their communities and encouraged to engage in political activities such as voting, lobbying and marches. This is succesfully getting youth the deserved recognition as changemakers in the channels of decision making.
OAYouth has organised workshops, discussion symposia and forums getting students and youth communitity leaders the principles of leadership that incorporate transparency, accountability and compassion. This is being fostered through participation, interactive dialogue and effective monitoring.
OAYouth enables youth to interact, exchanging ideas to understand political and human rights in primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions. Committees have been set up in institutions of learning to ensure that these processes are implemented and continue to function. Visits by students to various government and political institutions such as parliament are organised to encourage participation in nation-building processes.
Oratorical competitions are arranged so that articulate leaders can be identified and given exclusive opportunities to further their skills in oratory, diplomacy and politics.
Leaders and role models in Industry, Art, Politics and international institutions are invited to OAYouth workshops to address and inspire the youth.
